19th September 2020 Windsurfing: The Dip-Felixstowe Wind Direction: ENE Wind Stength: 18/25 Surf / Sea State: lumpy mess Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and warm Max Speed: 26.22 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 17.25 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Saurday 19th September - Windsurf *** - The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny and warm. Fin – 26.22 knot max, 24.28 knot ave ., 9.98 knot hour, 18.90 knot mile, 27.70 km ., 15.11 knot alpha. F2 282 Ride with Tushingham Lightning 7m and 38 fin. After an amazing family fun day at Waldringfield we got back in plenty of time for Rob and I to head down to the beach for another session with fingers crossed I have a better day than yesterday! I dropped Rob off at the cliff top car park again before returning to our spot at The Dip. With limited rigging option now with no 4.30 mast ( am looking for one, can anyone help?) and no 6.5 I again rigged my 7m with the 115 lt my favourite fin board:) I decided to beat up to join up with Rob who was the other side of the shingle bar in Bawdsey Bay which turned out to be a bit of a mistake! The beat over was fine including one run into the Deben but I tried to follow Rob across a shallow section leading to Felixstowe Ferry Sailing club but ran out of water and ran aground in a really fast flowing part, barely being able to stand my only option was to lay in the water and be washed out through a big wave and was lucky not to break another mast! Once in deep water I could water start and sail away but I was a little overpowered now and the sea was huge, just a mass of confused waves with no chance of gybing because as soon as you bear off you went too fast to stand a chance in the short sea! Rob was out here making light of the conditions, amazing really as he only kites a few times a year but he was certainly having fun, he is just like his Father preferring to head to quiet waters to sail by himself:) I managed to sail slowly to the back of the shingle bar where I was joined by Rob for a chat, I did say be careful out here in the big sea all by yourself! I then walked over the shingle, and sailed across the fast-flowing Deben and after a couple of runs I was safely back in open sea in much more manageable conditions! I then had loads of runs trying to improve the session. Wind from this direction NE to ENE especially around low water used to offer the best conditions you could get at Felixstowe, but now it is not as good as it used to be:( You used to have flattish water by the golf course and then when sailing broad you had a smooth swell but now with the flow of the River Deben entering the sea now runs parallel with the beach it has messed that up. You now get a much more messy sea even if it looks great from the beach out on the water it can be hard on the knees, You just have to take it easy going out and enjoy the ride back. The part actually crossing the fastest flow by the channel bouys is particularly bad as you sail directly into steep chop. Still I shouldn’t complain too much as it is great to be out again with Rob, its sunny and this NE wind just keeps on giving! I actually get to the end of the session with no breakages, result and then home for a fantastic family get together with both sons together for the first time in ages to continue to celebrate mags 60th Birthday:) Perhaps one last day of wind tomorrow! 60 pics for 60 years Photo Gallery Here MK booms Here |
